Laterality in Responce of Brain Activity during Mirror Therapy using Near-infrared Spectroscopy
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study presents the activation of left the prefrontal area by Mirror Therapy (MT) targeted to improve the function of the upper arms. The subjects were eight right handed females who were going to receive MT for the fi rst time. Cortical brain activity was compared through oxygen ized hemoglobin ([oxy-Hb]) using near infra-red multi-channel oxygen monitor, during resting image training (IT). The result showed a signifi cant increase of [oxy-Hb] in the lower left prefrontal area during the subjects imagined their fi xed left hand and their right hand was in motion. Our data sujest that the greater importance of the lower left prefrontal area than the lower right prefrontal to feel a mirror image illusion in the case of right-handed person.

Optical Imaging of the Motor Cortex in the Brain in Order to Determine the Direction of the Hand Movements Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS)
Introduction: In recent years, optical imaging has attracted a lot of attention from scholars as a non- aggressive, efficient method for evaluating the activities of the motor cortex in the brain. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS (is a tool showing the hemodynamic changes in a cortical area of the brain according to optical principles. The present study has been de...
متن کاملNear-infrared spectroscopy can reveal increases in brain activity related to animal-assisted therapy
[Purpose] Previous studies have indicated that animal-assisted therapy can promote recovery of psychological, social, and physiological function in mental disorders. This study was designed as a pilot evaluation of the use of near-infrared spectroscopy to objectively identify changes in brain activity that could mediate the effect of animal-assisted therapy. [Subjects and Methods] The participa...
متن کاملLocalized near-infrared spectroscopy and functional optical imaging of brain activity.
Changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral metabolic rates (CMRO2) have been used as indices for changes in neuronal activity. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can also measure cerebral haemodynamics and metabolic changes, enabling the possible use of multichannel recording of NIRS for functional optical imaging of human brain activity. Spatio-temporal variations of brain regions were d...
متن کاملVisual Perception of Incomplete Human-Like Body Postures: A Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study
Previous studies have reported that the mirror neuron system plays a crucial role in social cognition. We examined whether the higher-order cognitive functions are involved in the activations in the mirror neuron area when we perceive simplified pseudo-postures. We measured 14 participants’ brain activation during the posture-recognition task using near-infrared spectroscopy. The participants’ ...
متن کاملRelation between asymmetry of prefrontal cortex activities and the autonomic nervous system during a mental arithmetic task: near infrared spectroscopy study.
The present study evaluated the relationship between asymmetry of the prefrontal cortex activity and the automatic nervous system (ANS) response during a mental arithmetic (MA) task. Employing near infrared spectroscopy, we compared cerebral blood oxygenation changes in the right and left prefrontal cortices during a mental arithmetic task with HR changes. During the MA task, eight subjects (hi...
